New Road Architects was appointed to assist in the reorganisation and optimisation of a mixed-use hospitality development in Mbombela. The site’s natural slope became a key driver of the design, informing a vertical planning strategy that enables multiple access points and establishes a clear hierarchy between public and service zones.
PROJECT CONCEPT
Responding to the topography, the architecture is structured as a series of layered levels that integrate seamlessly with the landscape. This approach enhances legibility, improves circulation, and allows the development to engage with its surroundings while maintaining operational clarity and guest comfort.

The hotel was carefully reworked to improve the guest arrival sequence and front-of-house experience, while streamlining horizontal and vertical back-of-house movement. A rooftop restaurant and pool deck maximise panoramic views and relieve ground-level constraints, creating an elevated destination that anchors the development and strengthens its connection to the surrounding landscape.
